I've Never Felt God. A single cross on a distant hill against breaking golden light.

For the honest doubter

I've Never Felt God

Jeremiah 29:13

If you have never felt God, hear this first: the absence of a feeling is not the absence of God. Many faithful people, across whole lifetimes, have walked with God through long stretches where they felt nothing at all. Feelings are real but they are not the measuring stick, and building your whole assessment of God on whether you have had a certain emotional experience is like judging whether the sun exists by whether you happen to feel warm right now. God is not primarily met as a feeling. He is met as a Person who can be sought, and the promise is that seeking is not in vain.

“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”Jeremiah 29:13

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”Psalm 34:18

“That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:”Acts 17:27

“But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.”Deuteronomy 4:29

Let me be honest with you

Let us be honest about how uneven experience is. Some people describe vivid encounters; many describe almost none, and both can be walking with God. If you have been waiting for a dramatic feeling as proof before you will seek, you may be waiting for the wrong thing, and the wait can quietly harden into I guess He is not there. But the Bible never makes goosebumps the evidence. It points instead to seeking with the heart, and it says the LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, which locates God near the honest and the hurting, not only near the ecstatic.

What might really be going on

There can be many reasons a person has not felt God. Sometimes it is temperament; some of us simply feel less, about everything. Sometimes noise crowds it out, and quiet is where a still, small awareness has room to surface. Sometimes an old hurt has taught you to keep your guard up, including toward God. And sometimes we have been looking for Him only in fireworks and missing Him in the ordinary, in a moment of unexpected peace, in the pull toward goodness, in the very longing that made you type this. He seeks to be found, Scripture says, though he be not far from every one of us. Nearer than a feeling.

The One who welcomed the doubter

Jesus did not tell people to work up an emotion. He told them to come. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, He said, promising rest, not a rush. Faith that rests on Him holds even when feelings go silent, and feelings, when they come, become a gift rather than a foundation. And ye shall seek me, and find me, God promises, when ye shall search for me with all your heart, not when you finally feel the right thing. So do not wait to feel God before you seek Him. Seek Him, honestly and quietly, and let whatever you feel or do not feel be secondary to that.

God, I have never felt You, and if I am honest that has made me wonder if You are there at all. I am setting the feeling aside as the test. I am simply turning toward You and asking You to meet me, in quiet or in feeling, however You choose. I am willing to seek You even in silence. Amen.

Questions people ask

Does not feeling God mean He is not there?

No. Feelings are real but they are not the measure of what is real. Many deeply faithful people have gone long seasons feeling nothing while continuing to walk with God. The Bible points to seeking God with the heart, not to a required emotional experience, as the way He is found.

Why do some people feel God strongly and I do not?

People differ enormously in temperament and experience, both about God and about everything else. Some feel much, some little, and this is not a ranking of who is closer to God. What you feel is far less important than whether you keep honestly turning toward Him.

How can I meet God if not through feelings?

Through seeking rather than sensation: reading the words of Jesus, praying honestly, sitting in enough quiet for something subtler than fireworks, and paying attention to ordinary places God is often found, unexpected peace, the pull toward good, the very longing you feel. He promises to be found by those who seek Him with the heart.
