I Wish I Had Faith
I wish I had faith is one of the most honest prayers a person can pray, even if you did not mean it as a prayer. It means some part of you senses that faith is not naive but valuable, a kind of home you can see the lights of but cannot find the door to. That longing is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing as sentiment. Let me be honest with you
Let us be honest that you cannot buy faith or fake it into existence, and you already know that, which is part of the ache. But faith is also not a personality trait you were either born with or without. It comes, Scripture says, by hearing, which means it is more receivable than manufacturable. You do not generate it by clenching; you receive it by drawing near to its source and staying near. So the useful question is not how do I make myself believe, which no one can do, but where do I go to be near the thing faith grows from. That is a question with an answer.
What might really be going on
Sometimes the wish for faith is really a wish for what faith carries: peace, meaning, a sense that you are held, the hope that death is not the end and love is not an accident. Those hungers are not childish. They may be clues. And sometimes the wish is blocked by a belief that faith is intellectual surrender, believing without reason. It is not. You are allowed to seek honestly, to ask hard questions, to want evidence, and to let your faith be reasoned rather than blind. Bring the wish and the questions together. They belong in the same hands.
The One who welcomed the doubter
The father in Jesus' story did not wait for his wandering son to become worthy; when the son was yet a great way off, the father saw him, and had compassion, and ran. That is the posture of God toward the one who only wishes, who is only turning, who is not yet sure. And ye shall seek me, and find me, He promises, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. The wish for faith, followed honestly, tends to lead somewhere: not to a doctrine first, but to a Person who meets seekers. Jesus said, come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden. That includes the ones who only wish they could.

Can you make yourself have faith?
Not by force, no, and trying usually feels fake. But faith is described as something that comes by hearing and by drawing near to God, not something you manufacture by clenching your will. You cannot create it, but you can put yourself in the place where it grows, and you can honestly seek the One it points to.
Is wishing for faith a sign I secretly believe?
It may be a sign that something in you is already turning toward God, which is more than nothing. You do not have to resolve exactly what your wish means before you act on it. Let it lead you to seek, and let the seeking clarify what the wish was reaching for.
