How Do I Start a Relationship With God?
Starting a relationship with God is simpler than most people fear and more real than most people expect. It does not begin with cleaning yourself up, mastering theology, or feeling a certain way. It begins the way any relationship begins: with honest turning toward the other. Scripture puts it plainly: as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God. Received, not earned. You do not have to qualify. You come as you are, you turn toward God through Jesus, and you begin, imperfectly and honestly, to walk with Him. The door is not high and guarded. It is open, and it is lower than you think.

Let me be honest with you
Let us clear away two false pictures. The first says you must become good enough first, which gets it exactly backward; you come to God to be changed, not after you have changed yourself. The second says a relationship with God is only a feeling, so if you do not feel it, it has not begun. Neither is true. This relationship starts with a turning of the will, a real yes, that feelings may or may not accompany at first. You are not faking it by beginning before you feel it. You are doing what relationships require: showing up honestly and letting closeness grow with time.
What might really be going on
Here is what beginning actually looks like, in ordinary steps. Turn toward God honestly and tell Him so, in your own plain words; you do not need a formula. Trust that Jesus is who He said He is and receive Him, which is what opens the door. Then simply start walking: read His words in a Gospel, talk to Him through the day, find others who follow Him, and keep coming back when you fall. Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out, Jesus promised, which means the God you are turning to will not turn you away. The relationship deepens the same way all real ones do, by continuing.
The One who welcomed the doubter
Everything centers on Jesus, because He is how God came near enough to be known. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, He said, and I will give you rest. That is the invitation, not to a religion to perform but to a Person to know. You begin a relationship with God by beginning one with Him: turning, trusting, receiving, following. Do I have to fix my life before I come to God?
No, and that gets it backward. You come to God to be changed, not after you have changed yourself. Jesus welcomed people in the middle of their mess. The relationship starts with honest turning, and the transformation grows out of the relationship, not before it.
