Why does God seem hidden?

The short answer

If God is real, why does he not make himself obvious? It is a fair and painful question. Part of the answer may be that God wants to be known and loved, not merely proven, and overwhelming proof can compel assent without ever touching the heart. The Bible admits God can feel hidden and does not shame those who feel it. Yet it also says he is found by those who seek, and that he made himself most visible not in the sky but in the face of Jesus.

This ache is honored in Scripture, not scolded. The Psalms cry out asking how long God will hide his face, and a prophet says plainly that God is a God who hides himself. If you feel his absence, you are in the company of the faithful, not outside it.

“Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour.”

Perhaps a hiddenness that protects love

Consider why God might not flood us with undeniable proof. A love that is coerced by overwhelming evidence is not really love; it is surrender. By leaving room for trust, God may be seeking hearts that come to him freely rather than minds that merely cannot argue back. His seeming distance can be the space in which genuine relationship becomes possible.

Found by those who seek

The Bible does not leave the seeker without hope. It promises that God is not playing an impossible game of hide and seek but wants to be found by those who look for him honestly.

It comes back to Jesus

And to the question of where to look, Christianity gives a definite answer: look at Jesus. God's clearest self-disclosure was not a proof written across the heavens but a person who could be seen and touched, who said that whoever had seen him had seen the Father. If God seems hidden, the most hopeful place to seek him is in the face of Christ.
