How to Deal with Doubt

Doubt is not the opposite of faith; often it is faith wrestling honestly. God is not threatened by your questions, and doubt met well can lead to a deeper, sturdier trust.

  1. Bring your doubts to God, not away from Him

Do not let doubt drive you into hiding. Take your honest questions straight to God, who welcomes them.

“Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”Mark 9:24, King James Version

  2. Be honest about what you are really wrestling with

Name the specific doubt, whether it is a hard question, a wound, or a fear. Clarity is the first step to working through it.

“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD.”Isaiah 1:18, King James Version

  3. Return to what you do know

You do not have to resolve everything at once. Stand on the truths you are sure of while you work through the ones you are not.

“Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand.”Psalm 73:23, King James Version

  4. Seek honest answers and wise company

Many doubts have thoughtful answers. Read, ask trusted believers, and do not carry the questions alone.

“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”Proverbs 27:17, King James Version

  5. Keep coming to Jesus

When Jesus' hard sayings scattered many, His closest followers stayed because they had nowhere better to go. Keep drawing near even amid questions.

“Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.”John 6:68, King James Version

The One who makes this possible: Jesus

Jesus was gentle with doubters. He let Thomas touch His wounds rather than shaming him, and He met an honest father's help thou mine unbelief with compassion. He is not fragile, and He does not turn away those who come with questions. You can bring Him your doubt, and He will meet you there.

You are not meant to carry this alone. You can ask someone to pray with you, find people near you, or, if you would like a gentle place to begin, start with Jesus here.

Common questions

Is it a sin to doubt God?

Honest doubt is not a sin; it is often faith wrestling with hard questions. God welcomes your questions and is not threatened by them. The key is to bring your doubts to Him rather than turning away, and to keep seeking Him through them.

How do I deal with doubts about my faith?

Bring your doubts honestly to God, name what you are really wrestling with, and stand on the truths you do know while you work through the ones you do not. Seek thoughtful answers and wise company, and keep drawing near to Jesus.

Does doubt mean I have lost my faith?

No. Many strong believers pass through seasons of doubt, and wrestling honestly can deepen faith rather than destroy it. What matters is that you keep coming to Jesus with your questions, since He has the words of eternal life.
