How to Grow in Faith
Faith is meant to grow, like a seed becoming a tree. You cannot force growth, but you can tend the conditions where God grows you.
Feed on God's Word
Faith comes and grows by hearing God's Word. Regular time in Scripture is the main nourishment of a growing faith.
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”Romans 10:17, King James Version
Stay close to God in prayer
A living faith is a talking one. Keep the conversation with God going through the ordinary and the hard.
“Pray without ceasing.”1 Thessalonians 5:17, King James Version
Obey what you already know
Faith grows as it is used. Each step of obedience, however small, strengthens the muscle of trust.
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.”James 1:22, King James Version
Remember what God has done
Recall His faithfulness, in Scripture and in your own life. Remembering fuels trust for what lies ahead.
“I will remember the works of the LORD.”Psalm 77:11, King James Version
Grow alongside other believers
Faith is not a solo climb. The encouragement and example of others carries you when your own strength is low.
“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”Proverbs 27:17, King James Version
Let trials do their work
Hard times, met with trust, deepen faith more than easy ones. God uses even the struggle to make you strong.
“The trying of your faith worketh patience.”James 1:3, King James Version
The One who makes this possible: Jesus
Faith is not mainly about the strength of your believing but about the One you believe in. Jesus is called the author and finisher of our faith, the One who begins it and brings it to completion. As you keep your eyes on Him, He grows your trust, even when your grip feels weak.
Take the next step with company. You can gather the daily bread for today, spend a few minutes in worship, or bring it all to God in prayer.
Common questions
How can I grow my faith when it feels weak?
Feed it with God's Word, keep praying, and take small steps of obedience, since faith grows as it is used. Remember God's past faithfulness, and lean on Jesus, the author of your faith, rather than on the strength of your own believing.
Does doubt mean my faith is failing?
No. Honest doubt can be part of a growing faith. Bring your questions to God rather than away from Him; even a small, trembling faith placed in a great and faithful God is enough.
