Your pain is real

Forgiveness without returning to abuse

Forgiveness in the Christian sense does not mean going back to someone who harmed you, pretending it never happened, or handing your trust back on demand. Those are not forgiveness. Forgiveness and reconciliation are two different things, and you are never obligated to return to danger.

You have been told that if you were really a Christian you would forgive, and that forgiving means acting as though nothing happened, welcoming the person back, trusting them again. So you feel trapped between your faith and your safety, as if honoring God requires erasing yourself. That teaching is a distortion, and it has done real harm.
If you are being pressured to reconcile with or return to someone who has harmed you, please talk to safe people outside that pressure, and to authorities if there is any danger. Forgiveness never requires your safety.

What is true

Scripture calls for forgiveness, yes, but it never commands the victim to restore trust to the unrepentant or to walk back into harm. Forgiveness releases your grip on revenge and hands justice to God; it is for your freedom. Reconciliation is a separate thing that requires the offender's genuine repentance and changed behavior, and it may never be safe or wise. Even Jesus, who forgave from the cross, did not entrust himself to those who meant him harm. You can forgive and still keep every boundary that keeps you safe.

What Jesus said, and did

“Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.”
Luke 23:34
“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”
Romans 12:19
“But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men.”
John 2:24

One small step

Your one small step: release, if you can, the burden of wanting to repay them, into God's hands. That is forgiveness. Keep every boundary that keeps you safe. That is wisdom. They are not in conflict.

If you want to pray

God, I want to be free of the poison of what they did, but I will not walk back into harm to prove it. Help me forgive without erasing myself, and keep me safe. Amen.

Honest questions

Does forgiving mean I have to reconcile?
No. Forgiveness releases your desire for revenge and entrusts justice to God. Reconciliation requires genuine repentance and changed behavior from the other person, and it is never required where there is danger.
Do I have to restore trust to someone who abused me?
No. Trust is earned through consistent, proven safety over time. Forgiveness does not obligate you to trust an unrepentant or unsafe person, or to give them access to you.
Is it unchristian to keep boundaries?
No. Even Jesus did not entrust himself to those who sought to harm him. Boundaries protect the vulnerable, which is deeply in line with how God cares for you.

There is no rush

You do not have to decide anything today. You can read a little, close the page, and come back tomorrow, or never. Nobody here is keeping score, and you owe no one an answer. When you are ready, and only then, the gentlest place to meet Jesus is in his own words, watching how he treats the tired, the ashamed, and the ones everybody else gave up on.
