Paul urges believers to be imitators of God as beloved children and to walk in love, following Christ who gave himself as an offering and sacrifice to God. He warns that impurity, covetousness, and coarse talk have no place among the saints. Believers were once darkness but are now light in the Lord, so they must walk as children of light, bearing good fruit. Paul calls them to walk wisely, redeeming the time. Rather than being drunk with wine, they are to be filled with the Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and giving thanks always.
Submitting to one another in reverence for Christ, they order their households. Wives are to submit to their husbands as to the Lord, for the husband is head as Christ is head of the church. Where Ephesians 5 sits
This chapter continues the practical section of Ephesians, moving from general Christian conduct into specific relationships. Walking in love and light. Believers are to imitate God and walk in self-giving love modeled on Christ, leaving behind impurity and empty speech. Once darkness, they are now light in the Lord and must live as children of light, bearing good fruit and exposing the works of darkness rather than participating in them.
Filled with the Spirit. Instead of the false stimulation of drunkenness, Paul calls believers to be filled with the Spirit. The overflow is worship and gratitude: singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, making melody to the Lord in the heart, giving thanks always, and submitting to one another in reverence for Christ.
Marriage as a mystery of Christ. Paul frames marriage as an image of Christ and the church. Husbands are called to sacrificial love like Christ, who gave himself to sanctify and present his church without blemish. The union of husband and wife points beyond itself to the great mystery of Christ's saving love for his people.
How Ephesians 5 points to Jesus
Christ is the model and meaning throughout this chapter. Believers are told to walk in love as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, so the cross becomes the pattern for daily love. Christ is the light in whom believers now stand and the one to whom their songs and thanks are directed. The chapter's climax comes in the teaching on marriage, where Paul makes Christ the reference point for husbands: they are to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her, to sanctify and cleanse her and present her glorious, without spot or wrinkle. The one flesh union of marriage, Paul says, is a great mystery that speaks of Christ and the church. Human love at its best becomes a signpost to the redeeming, self-giving love of Christ for his people.

Whether or not you are married, this chapter holds up Christ's self-giving love as the measure of all love. Ask where you are called to give yourself for another's good rather than serve yourself. Let the way you love reflect the Savior who gave himself to make his people holy and whole.
A prayer. Lord Jesus, you loved and gave yourself for your church. Teach me to walk in that same self-giving love and to live as a child of light. Fill me with your Spirit, that my life overflows with worship, thanksgiving, and love for others. Amen.
