What they wanted

Bartimaeus sat by the road begging, blind. When he heard Jesus was passing, he cried out, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me. The crowd told him to be quiet, to stop making a scene. He shouted all the louder.

What Jesus did

Jesus stops and says, Call him. He asks Bartimaeus, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? and the man says, Lord, that I might receive my sight. Jesus says, thy faith hath made thee whole, and immediately he can see.

What changed

Bartimaeus receives his sight and follows Jesus down the road. The beggar the crowd tried to silence becomes a follower who can see. His persistence was not rudeness; it was faith.

For you if you feel unseen and unimportant, and people keep telling you to be quiet. If you feel unseen, and the world keeps telling you to lower your voice, Bartimaeus is for you. Jesus hears the cry others try to hush, and He stops for you.

Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. When others tell me to be quiet, help me keep crying out to You. Open my eyes. Amen.
