Returning to God After Years Away
When it has been years, the coming back can feel especially daunting. So much time has passed, so much has happened, and the version of you that once knew God can feel like a stranger. You may wonder whether there is any point, whether the door is still open after all this time, whether you would even know how to begin again. Take heart: with God, years away are not too many, and lost time is not beyond redemption. He is not tapping His watch, annoyed at how long you took. He is watching the road, glad you are turning back, and He has a particular promise for the years you feel you wasted.

Let us name what is keeping you away
The passage of years brings its own weights, regret over wasted time, the sense that you missed your window, embarrassment about returning to a faith you left long ago. Some of that grief is honest and worth bringing to God. But do not let it become a reason to stay away. It is never too late to return, and God is not measuring how long you were gone before deciding whether to receive you. The thief on the cross came to Jesus in the last hour of his life and was received fully. Whatever number of years you are carrying, it is not the number that decides your welcome. Your turning back is what matters now.
How to actually come back
God has a stunning word for the wasted years: I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten. He does not merely forgive the time you lost; He speaks of restoring it, redeeming it, weaving even the wasted seasons into something. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD; the invitation still stands however long it has been closed on your side. Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you. And remember the father's cry over the son who had been gone: this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. After all the years, He calls it being found, and He celebrates.
The Father who runs to meet you
When the long-gone son finally came home, his father did not scold him for how long he had stayed away; he threw a feast, because this my son was dead, and is alive again. That is God's response to your return after years, not a lecture about lost time, but joy that you are alive again and found. Jesus came to seek and to save the lost, and no length of absence puts you beyond His seeking. Bring Him the years, the regret, the long silence, and let the God who restores what the locust ate begin again with you. It is not too late. It has never been too late.

Is it too late to come back after all these years?
No. Scripture and history are full of people who returned to God after decades away, and even the thief beside Jesus was received in his final hour. God does not measure your welcome by the length of your absence. The invitation to return still stands, however long it has been closed from your side. It is never too late to turn back to a God who is watching the road for you.
What about all the time I wasted away from God?
God speaks directly to this, promising to restore the years the locust has eaten. He does not merely forgive lost time; He is able to redeem it, weaving even wasted seasons into your story and using what you learned in them. Bring the regret to Him honestly, receive His forgiveness, and trust Him with the redemption of the years. Your past does not have to define or limit your future with Him.

Start simply and expect to relearn as you go; God is patient with beginners and returners alike. Talk to Him honestly in prayer, begin reading a Gospel like John to get reacquainted with Jesus, and find a welcoming church where you can be supported rather than doing it alone. You do not need to remember everything or perform; you need only to come and let the relationship grow again from where you are.
