The door was never locked
I Walked Away From God
Maybe it was a slow drift you barely noticed until you looked up one day and He was far away, or maybe you turned and walked out on purpose, angry or hurt or just done. However you left, something in you is turning back now, or you would not be reading this. And right behind that turning comes the fear that you burned the bridge, that He is finished with you, that walking away used up whatever welcome you had. Hear this before anything else: that is not how God works. The door you think you slammed was never actually locked from His side, and the God you left has been watching the road for you the whole time.
“And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”Luke 15:20
“Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.”Jeremiah 3:22
“I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.”Hosea 14:4
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”James 4:8
Let us name what is keeping you away
Let us name what usually keeps people away, because it is rarely a lack of desire; it is shame, and the assumption that coming back requires groveling your way into forgiveness first. You may feel you have to clean yourself up before you can return, or prove your sincerity, or earn back trust. But that gets it exactly backward. You do not fix yourself and then come home; you come home and let God do the fixing. The prodigal son rehearsed a whole speech about becoming a servant, and his father never let him finish it. Whatever drove you away, and whatever you did out there, is not too much for the God who runs toward returning children.
How to actually come back
Coming back is simpler than you fear: it is turning around. Return, ye backsliding children, God says, and I will heal your backslidings. Draw nigh to God, Scripture promises, and he will draw nigh to you. You take one honest step toward Him, and you find He was already moving toward you. I will heal their backsliding, God says, I will love them freely. Freely, not grudgingly, not on probation. You do not have to manufacture feelings or perfect words. You only have to turn, honestly, and say some version of I am coming home, and mean it. The healing and the welcome are His to give, and He gives them gladly.
The Father who runs to meet you
Here is the picture Jesus painted of God receiving the one who left: when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. The father ran. Before the apology, before the cleanup, before anything was proven, the father ran. That is God toward you as you turn back. And it is possible because Jesus went out to the far country of the cross to bring you home, so that the welcome is not cheap sentiment but blood-bought certainty. He came to seek and to save that which was lost. You are the lost He came for. Turn around; He is already running.

Questions people ask
Do I have to fix my life before I come back to God?
No, and trying to gets it backward. You come to God as you are, in the middle of the mess, and He does the changing from there. The prodigal came home dirty and broke, and his father ran to him before a single thing was fixed. Cleaning yourself up first is neither possible nor required; return, and let God's grace begin the healing you cannot do on your own.
What if I walked away on purpose, not by accident?
It does not matter to the welcome. The prodigal left deliberately, demanded his inheritance, and wasted it on purpose, and still his father ran to meet him. God's readiness to receive you is not lessened because your leaving was intentional. What matters is not the manner of your leaving but the fact of your returning. Turn back honestly, and you will find Him already moving toward you.
How do I actually start coming back?
Simply turn toward God and tell Him honestly, in your own words, that you want to come home. There is no ritual to perform or feelings to manufacture. Draw near to Him, and Scripture promises He will draw near to you. From there, reconnect with His Word, with prayer, and with a church, letting the relationship grow again. But it starts with one honest turn, which He has been waiting for.
