A Christian youth ministry is a church's ministry to teenagers, usually roughly middle and high school age. It offers young people a safe place to belong, caring adult leaders, teaching from the Bible, worship, service, fun, and real friendships centered on Jesus. Most are run by a local church; some are parachurch groups that partner with churches and schools.
What is a youth ministry?
A youth ministry is the part of a church's life given to its teenagers. It usually has a youth pastor or leader, a team of volunteer adults, and a regular gathering of its own, alongside the Sunday worship the whole church shares. Some youth ministries are parachurch organizations that work with many churches and schools at once.
What does a youth ministry do?
A youth ministry gives teenagers a place that is theirs: weekly gatherings, small groups, camps and retreats, mission and service, and trusted adults who show up for them. Underneath the games and the pizza is a serious hope, that a young person would meet Jesus for themselves and be surrounded by a community that helps them follow him through the hardest years to do it alone.
The Bible never treats youth as a waiting room for real faith. It calls the young to lead by example, right now.
How to find one near you
The simplest way to find a youth ministry is through a healthy local church. Most churches either run one themselves or can point you to a trusted ministry nearby. You do not have to have it all figured out to walk in the door; you only have to come.

Alongside church youth groups, several long-standing parachurch ministries serve teenagers and partner with local churches and schools.
- Young Life
- Founded in 1941 in Gainesville, Texas, by the Presbyterian minister Jim Rayburn. It reaches teenagers through relational, adult-led clubs and camps, and connects them to local churches.
- Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)
- Founded in 1954 by the basketball coach Don McClanen. It serves athletes and coaches, with school-based huddles and camps that share the gospel through sports.
- Youth for Christ
- Grew out of youth rallies in the early 1940s and organized in 1944 with Torrey Johnson as its first president and Billy Graham as its first full-time evangelist. It works with young people through local chapters and school outreach.
- Awana
- Founded as a parachurch organization in 1950 by Lance Latham and Art Rorheim, from a children's program at a Chicago church. It is a children and youth discipleship program hosted inside local churches, known for Scripture memory.
