Christian Youth Ministries

A Christian youth ministry is a church's ministry to teenagers, usually roughly middle and high school age. It offers young people a safe place to belong, caring adult leaders, teaching from the Bible, worship, service, fun, and real friendships centered on Jesus. Most are run by a local church; some are parachurch groups that partner with churches and schools.

What a youth ministry is, and what it offers

A youth ministry gives teenagers a place that is theirs: weekly gatherings, small groups, camps and retreats, mission and service, and trusted adults who show up for them. Underneath the games and the pizza is a serious hope, that a young person would meet Jesus for themselves and be surrounded by a community that helps them follow him through the hardest years to do it alone.

The Bible never treats youth as a waiting room for real faith. It calls the young to lead by example, right now.

“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”
1 Timothy 4:12

How to find one near you

The simplest way to find a youth ministry is through a healthy local church. Most churches either run one themselves or can point you to a trusted ministry nearby. You do not have to have it all figured out to walk in the door; you only have to come.

Start with a church near you. The Living Bread keeps a growing directory of churches you can search, so you can find a congregation and simply ask what they offer.

Our church graph is how discovery turns into belonging: search brings you to a page, a page brings you to a congregation, and a congregation brings you to people who will actually know your name.

Real organizations in this space

Alongside church youth groups, several long-standing parachurch ministries serve teenagers and partner with local churches and schools.

Awana

The groups below are named for information only, not as an endorsement, and this is by no means a complete list. Ministries vary widely, and the best fit for you is usually the one nearest to you. Look to your own local church first, and weigh any ministry by Scripture and by the counsel of people you trust.

Come and belong

Behind every ministry is one simple thing: people who need one another and a Saviour who came to gather them. Youth ministry is only worth anything because it helps someone find Christ and the family he is building. You do not have to arrive whole. Come as you are, and come and see.

“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

Frequently asked questions

What age is youth ministry for?
It varies by church, but most youth ministries serve roughly middle and high school students, about ages 11 to 18. Many churches also run a separate children's ministry for younger kids and a young adult or college ministry after high school.
Is youth group only for Christian teenagers?
No. Most youth ministries warmly welcome any teenager, whether or not they follow Jesus or have ever been to church. It is often exactly where a young person first meets him.
How do we find a good youth ministry?
Start with a healthy local church near you and ask about their youth ministry, its leaders, and how they keep students safe. You can search churches on The Living Bread and simply reach out.
