A clean beginning you did not earn

The gospel is not that you must scrub yourself clean before God will have you. It is that Christ makes the crimson white (Isaiah 1:18), that when you confess he is faithful and just to forgive (1 John 1:9), and that in him you become genuinely new. This is not denial of the past; it is release from its verdict over you. The past may still have consequences to walk through, but it no longer gets to name who you are.

And because the new start rests on God’s faithfulness and not your willpower, it can survive your stumbling. When you fall, you do not start the whole thing over at zero. You get up, in the same grace, and keep walking.
