Who Was David in the Bible?
David was the shepherd boy who killed Goliath and became Israel's greatest king, a man after God's own heart whose psalms still teach us to pray, and an ancestor of Jesus.
Anointed as a youth while still tending sheep, David trusted God to fell the giant Goliath when the whole army shrank back. He rose to be king, united the nation, and longed to build a house for God, and God promised him an everlasting throne.
David was no plaster saint. He sinned grievously with Bathsheba and against Uriah, yet when confronted he broke, repented, and threw himself on God's mercy. His honest psalms of praise, lament, and repentance have given words to worshippers ever since.
