When You Can't Forgive

When you cannot forgive, being told that you should can feel like salt in the wound. Here is something gentler and truer: forgiveness is usually not a single decision but a long road, and being stuck on it does not make you a bad person. You do not have to manufacture a feeling you do not have. You can start by being honest with God that you cannot get there yet, and letting him do in you what you cannot do by force.

What you may be feeling

Maybe the hurt is too fresh, or too deep, or the person has never even acknowledged it. Maybe part of you is afraid that forgiving means saying it was okay, or letting them back in to hurt you again. It does not mean either of those things. If you are carrying a resentment you cannot seem to put down, you are not alone, and you are not failing.

What forgiveness is, and isn't

Forgiveness is releasing your right to revenge and handing the judgment to God. It is not saying the wrong was fine, and it is not the same as trusting the person again or returning to danger. Jesus took this seriously precisely because he knew how hard it is.

“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Matthew 6:14-15
“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”
Colossians 3:13

Notice the source of the strength: 'even as Christ forgave you.' You are not asked to squeeze forgiveness out of an empty tank. You draw it from having been forgiven yourself. And it can begin small: 'God, I cannot forgive this yet. I am willing to be made willing. Help me.'

A prayer you can borrow

God, I cannot forgive this on my own, and I am tired of carrying it. I do not even feel willing yet. So I ask you to make me willing. Take the weight of this from me a little at a time, and let your mercy for me soften my heart toward them. Amen.

There is no rush

You do not have to decide anything tonight. You can read a few lines, close the page, and come back tomorrow, or never. Nobody here is keeping score, and you owe no one an answer. When you are ready, and only then, the gentlest place to meet Jesus is in his own words, watching how he treats the tired, the ashamed, and the ones everybody else gave up on.

Frequently asked questions

What if I can't forgive someone?
Forgiveness is usually a process, not a single act of willpower, and being unable to get there yet does not condemn you. You can start by honestly telling God you cannot forgive yet and asking him to make you willing. It grows out of remembering how much you have been forgiven (Colossians 3:13).
Does forgiving someone mean I have to trust them again?
No. Forgiveness means releasing your right to revenge and handing judgment to God; it does not mean the wrong was acceptable, and it does not require restoring trust or returning to a harmful situation. Reconciliation is a separate step that depends on real change and safety.
