When You Are in the Dark
Maybe you cannot see a way forward. The path that once seemed clear has gone black, and you are feeling your way along walls, unsure which direction is even up. It might be grief that dimmed everything, or confusion, or a long stretch of unanswered questions, or a heaviness that settled in and refused to lift. Whatever brought the dark, you are not imagining it, and you are not weak for struggling to find light. This page will not tell you to simply cheer up or pretend the night is not real. It will bring you to Jesus, who called Himself the light of the world and who walks toward people in exactly the darkness you are in. Stay here a little while. Light does not always arrive as a flood. Sometimes it comes as a Person moving toward you in the dark.

Named honestly
The dark is disorienting. It steals your sense of where you are and where you are going. You may feel forgotten, as though the world moved on into daylight and left you in a room with the shades drawn. Things that used to comfort you feel distant. Prayers can feel like they hit the ceiling. You might be ashamed of how long this has lasted, wondering why you cannot just find the switch. Hear this plainly: the darkness is not proof that God has left, and it is not a verdict on your faith. Being in the dark is a real human place, one that many faithful people have walked through. You do not have to perform brightness you do not feel. You can be honest about the night.
What God speaks over you
Jesus said that He is the light of the world, and that whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life, as recorded in John chapter eight. The opening of John reminds us that the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it and never will. And the psalmist, in Psalm eighteen, testified that the Lord Himself lightens his darkness. This is what God speaks over you: the dark you are in has a limit, and His light has none. He does not wait for you to find your way out before He comes. His light enters the very place you feel most lost, and no amount of night can put it out.
How Jesus meets you here
Jesus does not shout instructions from a lit doorway across the room. He steps into the dark where you are. He is not afraid of your questions, your numbness, or the long silence you have been living in. He is the light, and light does not need you to generate it. It only needs to be let in. Think of how dawn comes, not all at once but slowly, gray before gold, until you realize you can see again. He often works that way with a hurting person, patient and near, giving enough light for the next step and no more. He knows the shape of your particular darkness. He will not leave you to feel your way alone. Follow the little light He gives, one step, and He will keep meeting you there.

Questions people ask
Does being in the dark mean my faith has failed?
No. Some of the most faithful people in Scripture walked through long, dark seasons. Darkness is a place you pass through, not a measure of how much you believe. Jesus meets people in the night without condemnation. Your struggle is not a failure. It is a place where His light can find you.
What do I do when I cannot feel God at all?
Keep turning toward Him even when feeling is absent, because His presence does not depend on your ability to sense it. Read slowly, pray honestly even if the words are few, and let others carry you. You can ask someone at The Living Bread to pray with you until the light returns.
