Find a Church
What to Wear to Church
Wear whatever is clean and comfortable, you do not need special clothes to go to church. Most churches today are casual, and jeans are completely fine. A few are dressier by custom, but no faithful church will turn you away for what you wear. God looks at your heart, not your outfit, so come as you are.
If worry about clothes has been quietly keeping you from going, please hear this: that worry is exactly the kind of thing Jesus sets people free from. You are wanted at church far more than any dress code.
The short answer
Come as you are. Clean and comfortable is all you need. If you own it and it makes you feel okay to walk in, it is fine.
What most people wear
- Casual churches (most common today). Jeans, a shirt, everyday clothes. You will blend right in.
- Dressier churches (some traditional or historic ones). Slacks or a dress are common, but a neat casual outfit is still welcome.
- Not sure? A middle ground, tidy casual, works almost everywhere. When in doubt, comfortable and clean beats anxious and stiff.
The heart of it
Long ago God told the prophet Samuel, ‘man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart’ (1 Samuel 16:7). A good church sees people the same way. What you wear will never be the reason you do or do not belong.
A gentle word
The invitation of Jesus has no dress code. ‘Come unto me,’ he says, to the tired and the burdened, and that means you, in whatever you own.

Come and see
Finding a church is really about finding the One the church gathers around. You do not have to have it all figured out, and you do not have to clean yourself up first. Jesus said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” That invitation is for you, exactly as you are today. A good church is simply a place where people help one another walk toward him.
