Visiting a Church for the First Time
Visiting a church for the first time is simpler than it feels. Arrive a few minutes early, sit wherever you like (the back is completely fine), and just watch and follow along. No one expects you to know the songs, the routine, or the answers. You are welcome to come as you are, stay quiet, and leave whenever you need to.
If the thought of walking in alone makes your stomach tighten, you are not strange, most people feel that on a first visit. The good news is that no one is watching you nearly as closely as you fear, and a warm church will simply be glad you came.
Before you go
- Arriving. Come five to ten minutes early so you are not rushed. Look for greeters at the door.
- Parking and entry. Many churches have signs or people to help you find your way in. It is okay to ask.
- Bringing someone. A friend makes it easier, but going alone is completely normal too.
Once you are inside
- Where to sit. Anywhere. The back or an aisle seat lets you relax and slip out if you need to.
- Following along. Words for songs are usually on a screen. Stand, sit, or simply stay seated, no one will mind.
- Giving. When an offering is collected, visitors are never expected to give. Just pass it along.
- Communion. If it is offered and you are unsure, it is perfectly fine to stay in your seat.
Afterward
You can quietly leave, or linger for a coffee if you feel like it. If someone asks about you, you owe no explanation, ‘I’m just visiting’ is a complete answer.

Whatever brought you to the door, the deepest welcome is not from a greeter but from Jesus, who says come to me, all who are weary, and I will give you rest.
