What the Bible says
What Does the Bible Say About Self-control?
The Bible calls self-control a fruit of the Spirit, the God-given freedom to say no to what would harm us and yes to what is good.
Self-control in Scripture is not white-knuckled willpower but the Spirit's work in a surrendered heart. It is the mastery over our appetites and impulses that keeps us free rather than enslaved.
The Bible compares it to a city with walls: without self-control, we are exposed and easily overrun. God grows this strength in us as we walk in step with His Spirit rather than our cravings.

How this points to Jesus
Jesus lived with perfect self-mastery, resisting temptation and setting His face toward the cross for our sake. He does not merely command self-control; He supplies it by His Spirit. As Christ takes the throne of our desires, we are set free to choose the good and to say no to what would enslave us.
