What Does ‘Apostle’ Mean in the Bible?

An apostle is one who is sent: specifically the messengers Jesus chose and sent out with His authority to proclaim the gospel and lay the foundation of the church.

The word apostle means one who is sent, a commissioned messenger. In the New Testament it refers especially to the small group Jesus personally chose, trained, and sent to bear witness to Him, along with a few others like Paul who were sent by the risen Christ.

The apostles were eyewitnesses of Jesus and His resurrection, entrusted with His teaching. Their testimony became the foundation on which the church was built, which is why their writings hold such weight in Scripture.
