Bible Verses for Husbands

To be a husband is to be handed a calling bigger than yourself: to love one person the way Christ loves the church. That is a high bar and a daily choice. These verses are for the husband who wants to love well and needs God's help to do it.

What God says over husbands

“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;”
Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it.
“Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.”
Love your wife and do not be bitter against her.
“Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.”
Dwell with her with understanding, honoring her, that your prayers are not hindered.
“Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.”
Rejoice in the wife of your youth; delight in her always.
“Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.”
The love your marriage needs is patient, kind, and unfailing.
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
The two shall become one flesh; guard that union above all others.
“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.”
Two are better than one; you were made to lift each other up.
“Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.”
Whoever finds a wife finds a good thing and favor from the Lord.
“And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.”
Take heed to your spirit and deal not treacherously; be faithful.
“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Lead your house to serve the Lord, starting with how you love her.

Where this all leads

The standard for a husband is not a feeling but a Person: love her as Christ loved the church, sacrificially, faithfully, to the end. You cannot do that on your own, and you were not meant to. Let Jesus love you first, fill you daily, and pour His love through you into your marriage.

Lord, teach me to love my wife the way You love Your church: patiently, sacrificially, faithfully. Forgive me where I have been selfish or harsh. Soften my heart, guard our union, and make me the husband she needs. Let our marriage reflect You. In Jesus name, amen.
