The Winds of the Bible: From the Breath of Life to the Rushing Mighty Wind

In Hebrew and in Greek, one word carries three meanings at once: wind, breath, and Spirit. So Scripture keeps blurring them on purpose. The Spirit of God moves like a wind over the dark waters at creation. God breathes into dust and it becomes a living soul. Ezekiel calls the four winds to breathe on a valley of dry bones until an army stands up alive. Jesus tells Nicodemus the wind blows where it wishes, and so is everyone born of the Spirit, then later breathes on his disciples and says, Receive ye the Holy Ghost. And at Pentecost a sound like a rushing mighty wind fills the house.
