Jesus watched people give to the temple treasury. The rich put in large sums; a poor widow put in two tiny coins. Jesus said she had given more than all of them, because they gave out of their abundance, but she gave all she had. The story teaches that God measures a gift by the love and trust behind it, not by its size, which honours the poor without shaming the rich.

Jesus completely reverses the world’s accounting. By any ledger, the rich gave far more money. By God’s reckoning, the widow gave the most, because giving is measured proportionally, against what you have and hold back, and by the trust it takes. The rich gave from their surplus and felt nothing; she gave ‘all the living that she had’ and trusted God for tomorrow.

This is deeply freeing, and it cuts in two directions at once. It means no one is too poor to give something precious to God; the smallest gift, given in love, is seen and treasured. And it gently warns the comfortable that a large gift which costs us nothing may weigh little in heaven. Jesus is not shaming the rich givers, they gave genuinely, nor is he romanticising the widow’s poverty. He is teaching that the heart is what God sees.
