How to Forgive Someone Who Is Not Sorry

Luke 23:34

This is one of the hardest versions of forgiveness, because part of us waits for the apology as the thing that finally makes it fair. When it never comes, forgiveness can feel like letting them win, like saying the harm did not matter. It does not mean that. Here is the freeing and difficult truth: forgiveness does not require the other person's participation at all. It is not a transaction between the two of you; it is something that happens between you and God, releasing a debt that the other person may never even acknowledge. You can forgive someone who is not sorry, who will never apologize, who has died, who does not even know they hurt you. Your freedom was never in their hands.

“Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.”Luke 23:34

“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”Romans 12:19

“Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”Romans 12:21

“And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.”Acts 7:60

Let's be honest about this

Let us be honest that waiting for the apology keeps you tied to them. As long as your peace depends on them saying sorry, they hold the key to your healing, and if they are unrepentant, they will never turn it. That is a prison with the door locked from their side. And let us also be honest that forgiving the unrepentant is not the same as trusting them or reopening the door to more harm. You can release the debt and still keep your distance; in fact, where there is ongoing harm, distance is wise and forgiveness never requires you to walk back into danger. Releasing bitterness and maintaining a boundary are not opposites. They often belong together.

What forgiveness really is (and isn't)

Forgiveness of the unrepentant is really an act of handing over judgment. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath; for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. That verse is not cold; it is a relief. It means you do not have to be the judge, the jury, and the one who makes it right. You can lay the case down before a God who sees exactly what happened, who will not overlook it, and who is far more just than your resentment could ever be. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. Forgiveness is how you refuse to let their evil turn you bitter, how you keep the wrong from spreading into your own soul.

Where forgiveness actually comes from

Look at how Jesus did it. While the nails were going in, while the very people who mocked Him felt no remorse at all, He prayed, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. He did not wait for repentance to release them. Stephen, dying under the stones, echoed it: Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. This is not human strength; it is grace flowing from Someone who was forgiving His enemies at the exact moment they were killing Him. That same grace is offered to you. You do not forgive the unrepentant by finding it in yourself; you forgive by drawing from the One who forgave you while you were still His enemy, for while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Who is Jesus? · Begin with Jesus · Ask someone to pray with you

Lord Jesus, they are not sorry, and I have been waiting for an apology that may never come. I do not want to stay chained to that. Today I release them to You. I give up my right to repayment and my need for them to admit it. You are the just Judge; I lay the whole thing in Your hands. Free me from the bitterness even if they never change. You forgave those who were not sorry; do that same work in me now. Amen.

Questions people ask

How can I forgive someone who won't even admit they hurt me?

Because forgiveness is between you and God, not a deal you strike with them. You release the debt whether or not they acknowledge it. Jesus forgave people who felt no remorse. Their repentance would be good for them, but it is not the price of your freedom, and you do not have to wait for it to let go.

Isn't forgiving them letting them off the hook?

You are not the hook; God is. Forgiveness means handing judgment to Him rather than carrying it yourself. Scripture says vengeance belongs to the Lord, who sees everything and is perfectly just. You are not excusing the wrong; you are trusting a better Judge with it, and freeing yourself from being consumed by it.

Do I have to reconcile with someone who is not sorry?

No. Forgiveness releases the debt; reconciliation requires repentance, changed behavior, and often rebuilt trust over time. You can fully forgive someone and still keep a boundary, especially if they are unrepentant or unsafe. Forgiving is about your heart before God; reconciling is a separate question that wisdom and safety must guide.
