To Hagar in the Wilderness
Hagar, pregnant and cast out, flees Sarai and collapses by a spring in the desert. There the Angel of the LORD finds her, calls her by name, hears her affliction, and gives her a promise for her son. This is the first time in Scripture this figure appears, and already the encounter feels like meeting God.

What happened
The Angel of the LORD finds Hagar by a fountain of water on the road to Shur. He calls her by name and asks where she has come from and where she is going. When she answers honestly, he tells her to return and submit, then promises to multiply her seed beyond counting. He names her unborn child Ishmael, meaning God hears, because the LORD has noticed her affliction. Hagar responds by calling the LORD who spoke to her by a name that means the God who sees me, and she marvels that she has seen him and still lives. The well is afterward named Beerlahairoi, remembering the God who lives and sees.
Why many see the pre-incarnate Christ
Many Christians read this figure as more than an ordinary messenger because Hagar addresses him directly as the LORD and speaks of seeing God face to face. He promises to multiply her descendants, a thing only God can grant, and speaks in the first person as God rather than merely relaying words. This has led the church to see here a visible appearance of the LORD, and some see the pre-incarnate Son. Yet this is interpretation, not proof. Faithful readers differ. Some understand the Angel as a created messenger who so fully represents God that Hagar responds as though God himself were present, a pattern seen elsewhere in Scripture.
Is this the Son before Bethlehem?
The church has long loved this scene because it shows a God who seeks the outcast, the foreign slave woman no one came after. Many have seen in this seeking figure a foreshadowing of Jesus, who goes after the one and calls the forgotten by name. Whether or not this is the pre-incarnate Son, the character revealed here is unmistakably the character of Christ, who receives the Samaritan woman at another well and tells her all she ever did. We should hold the identification humbly. What is certain is that the God who found Hagar is the same God made flesh in Jesus, and his tenderness toward the broken has not changed.
