While Gideon threshes wheat in a winepress to hide it from raiding Midianites, the Angel of the LORD sits under an oak and greets him as a mighty man of valor. Through the conversation that follows, the narrative shifts between the Angel and the LORD, until Gideon fears he has seen God and lives.

What happened
The Angel of the LORD comes and sits under an oak, then greets the fearful, hiding Gideon as a mighty man of valor with the LORD upon him. Gideon protests that God has abandoned Israel to Midian. The narrative then says the LORD looks upon him and commissions him to save Israel, blending the Angel and the LORD as one speaker. Gideon asks for a sign and prepares an offering. The Angel touches the meat and unleavened cakes with the tip of his staff, and fire rises out of the rock to consume them, then he vanishes. Realizing he has seen the Angel of the LORD face to face, Gideon fears for his life, but the LORD assures him he will not die.
Why many see the pre-incarnate Christ
Two things move many readers here. The narrative slides back and forth between the Angel of the LORD and the LORD as though they are one, and Gideon reacts with the dread of a man who has seen God and expects to die for it. Fire from the rock consuming his offering marks the visitor as more than a man. For these reasons many Christians read this Angel as a manifestation of the LORD, and some as the pre-incarnate Son. We hold this as interpretation, not proof. The shifting between Angel and LORD may reflect a messenger who so bears God's presence and words that the writer names them interchangeably, a pattern faithful readers understand in more than one way.
Is this the Son before Bethlehem?
The church has loved how this Angel greets a frightened man hiding in a winepress as a mighty man of valor, naming not what Gideon is but what grace will make him. Many have heard in this the voice of Christ, who calls fishermen apostles and the weak strong, and who receives the offering with fire from heaven. Whether or not the Angel is the pre-incarnate Son, the God who commissioned Gideon is the God who still meets us in our hiding places and speaks over us a future we cannot yet see. The One who says the LORD is with you is the same Lord who promises never to leave us, and who calls the fearful to deliverance.
