Find Jesus From Where You Are

Jesus for People Who Were Hurt by Church

If a church hurt you, the pain is real and Jesus does not brush it aside. He reserved his sharpest words for religious leaders who loaded burdens on people and shut the door of God in their faces. Being wounded by a church is not the same as being rejected by Jesus. You can come to him directly, and there is no shame in coming slowly, or from a distance, or with your guard still up.

This is an honest page, not an attempt to rush you back through a door that hurt you. Take the time you need.

If this is you

Maybe you were controlled, shamed, excluded, or worse, and it was done in God's name. That is a real wound, and naming it is not bitterness. Jesus never asked anyone to swallow abuse and call it faithfulness. The hurt you carry deserves to be taken seriously, and he does take it seriously.

Jesus was angriest at religious harm

Read the Gospels and you find that Jesus was gentle with the broken and fierce with the religious powerful who crushed them. The people he rebuked most sharply were the ones who used God to burden others.

“For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.”
Matthew 23:4
“But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.”
Matthew 23:13

The door is open, no shame

Jesus is not the institution that hurt you, and he is not standing with the people who did. His actual invitation, in his own words, is rest, not another burden.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

You can come to him directly, without a middleman, and you can come at your own pace. If church community feels unsafe right now, that is understandable, and it does not put Jesus out of reach.

Frequently asked questions

Does Jesus care that I was hurt by a church?
Yes. Jesus reserved his harshest words for religious people who harmed the vulnerable (Matthew 23), and his invitation is rest for the weary, not more burdens (Matthew 11:28). Your pain is taken seriously.
Can I follow Jesus without going back to a church that hurt me?
You can come to Jesus directly, at your own pace. Healing from church harm takes time, and being wary of an unsafe community is understandable. Jesus is not the institution that wounded you.
Is being hurt by church the same as being rejected by God?
No. People, including religious people, can misrepresent God badly. Jesus is not standing with those who harmed you in his name. The door to him is open, with no shame.

Come and see, on your own terms

This page is an honest invitation, not a trap. No one here will pressure you, shame you, or ask you to pretend you believe more than you do. The living Christ is not an argument to be won but a Person to be met, and he welcomes the doubtful and the tired as gladly as anyone. Read his own words and see for yourself. The Gospel of John is a gentle place to begin, and it costs you nothing but a little quiet and an honest look.
