Is Science Compatible With Christianity?
For most working scientists and theologians the honest answer is yes, and the supposed war between them is largely a nineteenth-century invention. Science asks how the physical world works; the Christian faith asks who made it, why, and whether it means anything. Those are different questions, and the same universe can be studied under a microscope and received as a gift. Two questions, not one
A great deal of heat is generated by treating one question as if it were another. ‘How did the universe come to be in its present form?’ is a scientific question, answered by cosmology, physics, and biology. ‘Why is there a universe at all, and does it mean anything?’ is a philosophical and religious question that no experiment settles. Confusing the two produces bad science and bad theology alike.
Many of the founders of modern science, including Kepler, Newton, Boyle, Faraday, and Maxwell, were devout believers who saw the lawful order of nature as the signature of a rational Creator. That is not proof of anything, but it should end the lazy assumption that faith and science cannot share a mind.
