If you are drawn to Jesus but afraid of what it might cost you, please hear this clearly: you can explore quietly, privately, and safely. God sees the heart, not the display. Faith has never required anyone to broadcast themselves or take needless risks. You are allowed to go slowly, to keep your own counsel, and to protect yourself while you seek.
God sees the heart, not the spectacle
You do not have to announce anything to anyone to seek God. Some of the most sincere seekers in the Gospels came to Jesus quietly. Nicodemus came to him by night, privately, and Jesus received him warmly, without shaming him for his caution (John 3:1-2). You can read, think, and pray in private, and God is fully present to that.
Faith is not recklessness
Jesus himself was wise about danger. He withdrew from hostile crowds, he moved carefully when authorities sought him, and he told his followers to be shrewd as well as gentle.
So caution is not a lack of faith; it is part of wisdom Jesus commended. If revealing your interest could bring you harm, you are under no obligation to reveal it. Seek quietly. Take your time.

You can read the Gospel of John privately. You can pray in your own words, in your own heart, where no one hears but God. You can think and question freely; honest questions are welcome, not offensive to him. If and when you want other people, look for those who are genuinely trustworthy and safe, and go slowly. There is no timetable, and there is no test you are failing by being careful.
A clear word of care
Nothing here will ever ask you to expose yourself, to declare yourself publicly, or to put your safety at risk. If your situation is genuinely dangerous, your caution is wisdom, and God honours it. Explore at the pace that keeps you safe. He is patient, and he is not going anywhere.

God, if you are there, I want to seek you honestly. Meet me quietly, where I am, as I am. Give me wisdom to be safe, patience to go at the right pace, and the courage to keep asking honest questions. If Jesus is who he says he is, show me. Amen.
