When the ground gives way

How do I trust God when everything is falling apart?

Trust is easy to talk about when life is steady and nearly impossible when the ground gives way. If everything is coming apart right now, the goal is not to feel calm or to pretend the fear is not real. Trust is not a feeling you manufacture. It is a direction you keep facing, even while afraid.

“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned.”
Isaiah 43:2

Notice the words: through the waters, through the fire. God does not promise you will skip the flood. He promises you will not go through it alone, and it will not have the last word.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
Proverbs 3:5

Trust in the dark, one grip at a time

When you cannot see the whole staircase, trust is just the next step. You do not have to muster faith for the entire crisis at once. You bring God today, this hour, this next breath. It helps to remember what He has carried you through before, to say your fear out loud to Him and to safe people, and to hold on even when your grip feels weak. Faith is not the absence of fear. It is holding on to God in the middle of it.
