Quieting the storm
How do I find peace?
The short answer
The Bible speaks of a peace unlike the world's, one that does not depend on everything being fixed because it is anchored in God Himself. It usually comes not all at once but as you hand your worries to Him honestly, one at a time, and let your mind rest on Him rather than the fear.
If your mind will not stop and your chest stays tight, peace can feel like a country you have lost the map to. The Bible speaks about a peace that is not the same as everything being fixed, a peace that can hold even when circumstances do not.
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
John 14:27
Notice that Jesus offers a peace unlike what the world gives. The world's peace depends on nothing going wrong. This one is anchored outside your circumstances, in God Himself, which is why it can survive things that should shatter it.
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
Isaiah 26:3
How it tends to come
Peace like this rarely arrives all at once. It usually comes as you hand your worries to God honestly, one at a time, and let your mind rest on Him rather than circling the fear. It grows in quiet, in prayer, in Scripture, and in the company of steady people. If the unrest is constant and physical, that can also be anxiety that deserves care from a doctor or counselor, and seeking that help is wise, not weak.
