Setting yourself free
How do I forgive myself?
The short answer
Self-forgiveness starts by receiving what God already offers. If the God who knows everything you have done is willing to forgive you, holding yourself to a harsher standard is not humility. Repair what harm you can, then let God have the rest and stop punishing what is already forgiven.
Sometimes the person you cannot forgive is you. You replay it, you carry it, you decide quietly that you do not deserve to move on. That weight is real, and it is exhausting.
Here is something gentle and true. In the Bible, forgiveness comes from God, and when God forgives, the matter is genuinely settled. If the God who knows everything you have done is willing to forgive you, then holding yourself to a harsher standard is not humility. It is refusing a gift you have already been given.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9
“As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”
Psalm 103:12
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 8:1
Guilt and shame are not the same
Guilt says I did something wrong; that can be honest, and it can lead you to make things right where you can. Shame says I am something wrong; that is a lie, and it only buries you. Where you have harmed someone, do what you can to repair it. Then let God have the rest. You are allowed to stop punishing yourself for what has already been paid for and forgiven.
If the weight ever grows so heavy that you do not want to be here, please reach out right now: you are not alone, and help is here.
