How do I start over with God?

The short answer

Starting over with God is not a rare privilege you can use up; it is the heart of what He offers, and His mercy is new every morning. You begin simply by turning toward Him and telling Him the truth of where you are. That turning is not punishment. It is coming home.

Maybe you walked away years ago. Maybe you never really started. Maybe you are carrying a pile of failed attempts and a quiet certainty that God is tired of you. Here is the truth: starting over with God is not a rare privilege you have used up. It is the very heart of what He offers, and His mercy is new every single morning.

“It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

It is simpler than you fear

Starting over does not require a dramatic performance or a clean record. In the story Jesus told, the son who had wasted everything simply turned toward home, and his father ran to meet him. You begin the same way: by turning, honestly, and telling God the truth of where you are. That turning is what the Bible calls repentance, and it is not a punishment. It is coming home.

Then take small, real steps. Talk to God daily, even clumsily. Read a little of the Gospels. Find some people who follow Jesus and let them walk with you. You do not have to get it all right. You just have to keep turning back.

God, I have started and stopped so many times that I almost did not come back again. But here I am. I am turning toward You. Receive me, and help me begin, one honest day at a time. Amen.
