Serve Christ

How Do I Find My Calling?

Your first and deepest calling is to know and love God, and to love your neighbour. Everything else grows from that. To discern where God is leading, look at the gifts he gave you, the needs that stir your heart, the counsel of wise believers, and the doors he opens as you walk in obedience. Calling is usually found on the road, not before you take the first step.

Your first calling comes before any other

Before God calls you to a job, a place, or a work, he calls you to himself. Loving God and loving people is the calling under every other calling, and you can begin living it today, whatever your circumstances.

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10
“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
Micah 6:8

How direction usually becomes clear

Christians through the ages have found four honest signals worth weighing together, prayerfully and without pressure:

Where these line up, you are usually close. And you rarely see the whole path at once. God tends to give light for the next step, and the next step is often enough.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my calling as a Christian?
Start with your first calling: to know and love God and love your neighbour (Micah 6:8). To discern direction, weigh four things together: your gifts, the needs that burden your heart, the counsel of mature believers, and the doors God opens as you obey. Clarity usually comes as you walk, not before.
Does everyone have a specific calling?
Every believer is called to love God and serve others, and God prepares good works for each of us to walk in (Ephesians 2:10). Not everyone has a dramatic, singular calling to one job or place. Faithfulness in ordinary work and love is itself a calling worth honouring.
How do I know if a calling is from God?
Test it in prayer and in Scripture, and test it in community. A calling from God will line up with his character and Word, be confirmed by wise believers who know you, fit the gifts he has given, and typically show itself through opened doors rather than forced ones.

Begin where you are

You do not have to have it all figured out to take a first step. Serving Christ starts small and near: a prayer prayed with someone, a need met on your street, a seat taken in a church this Sunday, a Gospel read with an open heart. He gives the growth. Pick one thing, and begin today.
