Manna Morning

Gather just enough. Hoarding rots. A reflex game with a twist. Bread falls with the dew; tap to gather. Each day has its need, an omer. Gather exactly enough and you are fed; gather more and share the extra with your neighbour, or keep it and watch it breed worms by morning. On the sixth day gather double, because on the seventh nothing falls, and you rest.

How to play

  1. Go out with your basket. The morning shows the day's need at the top.
  2. Manna falls in four columns for eleven seconds. Tap each flake to gather it.
  3. The basket bar turns green at exactly enough and red when you have gathered more than the need.
  4. At the end of each morning, decide what to do with any extra: share it with your neighbour, or keep it and meet the worms.
  5. On the sixth day the need is doubled, because on the seventh nothing falls and you rest.
  6. After seven mornings, read the week: fed, shared, rotted, rested.

A session, start to finish

Morning one: the need is seven, the flakes fall, you gather eight. Share the extra or keep it? Keep it, and morning two opens with worms. Morning six doubles the need. Morning seven falls silent, and the screen tells you to rest. The whole week takes two minutes, and the summary shows exactly which days you were fed, what you shared, and what you let rot.

The Scripture it stands on

And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.

Exodus 16:18, King James Version

What it forms in you

Trust in daily provision and the discipline of enough. The hands learn the rhythm of gathering, sharing and resting that the wilderness taught Israel.

Who it is for

Anyone who worries about tomorrow, families teaching contentment, and people who need a picture of Sabbath they can feel.

A reflection

He that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack. What are you gathering past your need, and who could the extra feed?

Questions people ask

What happens if I gather too much?

You choose: share the extra with your neighbour and it counts as love, or keep it and by morning it has bred worms.

Why is there no manna on the seventh day?

Because the Sabbath is written into the game as it was into the wilderness: the double portion from the sixth day is enough, and you rest.

How long is a round?

Seven mornings, about two minutes.
