The First Time Reading the Gospels
The Gospels are four accounts of the life, teaching, death, and resurrection of Jesus: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Reading them for the first time is the best way to meet Jesus in his own words and actions rather than through what people say about him. You do not need to read all four at once. Pick one, read a little at a time, and watch how he treats people. That is where most faith begins.

Think of the four as four friends describing the same person from different angles; together they give a fuller portrait. You do not need to resolve every question first. You just need to start reading and let Jesus make his own impression on you.
The four, and where to begin
Mark is the shortest and most fast-paced, a great first read. John is the most reflective and personal, and states its purpose plainly. Matthew connects Jesus to the older promises of Israel. Luke is careful and full of compassion for outsiders. Any of them is a fine door; many people start with Mark or John.
As you read, watch what Jesus does: who he touches, who he defends, what makes him angry, what makes him weep. The Gospels are not mainly a rulebook; they are an invitation to meet a Person. Read slowly, and let him surprise you.

You do not have to decide anything tonight. You can read a few lines, close the page, and come back tomorrow, or never. Nobody here is keeping score, and you owe no one an answer. When you are ready, and only then, the gentlest place to meet Jesus is in his own words, watching how he treats the tired, the ashamed, and the ones everybody else gave up on.
