The first time
The First Time Reading the Bible
The first time you open the Bible, it can feel intimidating: it is long, old, and not arranged like a normal book. Here is the freeing part. You do not have to start at page one or read it all. The best place for most people to begin is one of the Gospels, the accounts of Jesus' life, where the whole story comes into focus. Read a little, slowly, and ask God to meet you in it.
What you may be feeling
You might feel lost about where to start, worried you will not understand it, or put off by old-fashioned language. Those are fair reactions. The Bible is really a library of sixty-six books written over centuries, so dipping in randomly can be confusing. The fix is simple: start in the right place, take small bites, and do not pressure yourself to grasp everything at once.
Where to start
Begin with a Gospel. The Gospel of John is warm and reflective; the Gospel of Mark is short and fast-moving. Read a chapter or even a few verses at a time. It is fine to use a modern-English translation if older language slows you down.
A gentle rhythm: before you read, pause and ask God to speak. Read a short passage slowly. Notice one thing that stands out or puzzles you, and sit with it. You are not cramming for a test; you are getting to know a Person through the story about him.
A prayer you can borrow
There is no rush
You do not have to decide anything tonight. You can read a few lines, close the page, and come back tomorrow, or never. Nobody here is keeping score, and you owe no one an answer. When you are ready, and only then, the gentlest place to meet Jesus is in his own words, watching how he treats the tired, the ashamed, and the ones everybody else gave up on.
