Christianity Without the Baggage
Strip away the politics, the shame, the culture wars, the performance, and the fear, and something, someone, remains: Jesus. The baggage is real, and much of it deserves to be set down. But it is baggage precisely because it was piled on top of him, not because it came from him. Underneath all of it is a person worth meeting on his own terms.
If the word ‘Christian’ now carries a heavy load, partisan politics, judgment, money, scandal, performance, you did not invent that association. It was earned. Setting that baggage down is not losing your integrity. It may be the only way to see clearly what, or who, is underneath.
The baggage is not the center
Much of what people reject about Christianity really is baggage: cultural, political, and personal things fastened to Jesus’ name that he never asked for. Jesus refused political power when it was offered, and he would not let a nationalist crowd make him their king.
He was not a partisan, a culture warrior, or a moral scorekeeper. He said his kingdom was of another kind entirely.
What remains when the baggage is gone
Take away the accretions and here is the irreducible core: a God who loves the world and came to rescue it, not to condemn it.
Who Jesus actually was
He welcomed outsiders, healed the sick, forgave the guilty, told the truth to the powerful, and laid down his life. That is the center. Everything worth keeping in Christianity flows from him, and everything toxic came from forgetting him.

- What is Christianity without the baggage?
- At its center is a person: Jesus. Strip away partisan politics, shame, culture wars, and performance, and what remains is a God who came to rescue and reconcile people out of love (John 3:17), not to condemn them.
- Was Jesus political?
- Not in the partisan sense. He refused to let a crowd make him king by force (John 6:15) and said his kingdom was 'not of this world' (John 18:36). Much political Christianity is baggage attached to his name, not his own agenda.
- How do I find Jesus underneath all of it?
- Read the Gospels for yourself, slowly, and let your impression of Jesus come from the source rather than from his loudest representatives. Start at /meet-jesus or read Mark 1.
Meet him before you decide about the rest
You do not have to defend the church that wounded you, or the Christians who let you down, or any argument anyone has ever made in his name. Set all of it down for a moment. Before you decide what you think about Christianity, meet the man at the center of it, in his own words, without anyone standing between you and the page. Watch how he treats the tired, the shamed, and the ones religion threw away. Then decide.
