Is Christianity Just About Rules?
If Christianity came to you as a long list of do’s and don’ts enforced by fear, you met a distortion of it. Jesus did not add rules, he reduced everything to love: love God, love your neighbour. He treated the whole religious system as pointing toward that, and to the exhausted he offered rest, not a heavier ledger to keep.
If faith felt like an endless test you were always failing, a list of rules with fear behind them and no rest in front of them, that exhaustion was telling you something. Jesus was not the author of that treadmill. He said the point was never the list. It was love.
He reduced it all to love
Asked to name the single most important commandment, Jesus did not recite a rulebook. He named love, and said everything else hangs on it.
He said the whole law and the prophets depend on those two, and that mercy matters more than religious box-ticking.
Rest, not a heavier ledger
To people crushed under religious demand, Jesus offered the last thing a rulekeeper would offer.
Who Jesus actually was
Christianity, at its center, is not a scoring system you pass or fail. It is a relationship with a person who already loves you, out of which love for God and others grows. Rules that come from that are servants of love. Rules that replace love are the very thing Jesus opposed.

Honest questions
- Is Christianity just a list of rules?
- No. Jesus reduced everything to love: 'thou shalt love the Lord thy God... and thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these' (Mark 12:29-31). Rule-keeping without love is the distortion he opposed.
- Did Jesus care about rules at all?
- He cared far more about the heart behind them. He said God desires 'mercy, and not sacrifice' (Matthew 9:13), and he treated love of God and neighbour as the point that the rest was always meant to serve.
- If it's not rules, what is Christianity?
- At its center it is a relationship with Jesus, who already loves you, out of which genuine love for God and others grows. To the weary he offers rest, not a heavier ledger (Matthew 11:28-30).
Meet him before you decide about the rest
You do not have to defend the church that wounded you, or the Christians who let you down, or any argument anyone has ever made in his name. Set all of it down for a moment. Before you decide what you think about Christianity, meet the man at the center of it, in his own words, without anyone standing between you and the page.
