Meet Jesus first

Jesus Is Not the Christians Who Hurt You

Christians can wound deeply, with judgment, hypocrisy, cruelty, or betrayal, and pretending otherwise helps no one. But it is only fair to judge Jesus by who Jesus is, not by the people who misuse his name. He was often let down by his own followers too, and he told the truth about religious hypocrites more bluntly than any skeptic ever has.

If Christians hurt you, shamed you, excluded you, judged you, or worse, that pain is real and it deserves to be taken seriously, not smoothed over with a verse. You are allowed to be angry. What follows is not a defense of the people who wronged you. It is an invitation to tell them apart from Jesus.

Jesus was let down by his own

If you assume Jesus and his followers are the same, remember how his followers treated him. One betrayed him for money, one denied even knowing him, and the rest ran away when it counted. Jesus knew exactly what people are capable of, including religious people.

“But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.”
Matthew 26:56

He never pretended his followers were the proof of his goodness. He pointed to himself.

He named the hypocrites first

No critic of hypocritical Christians has ever been harsher than Jesus was toward the religious hypocrites of his day.

“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!... ye have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith.”
Matthew 23:23

Who Jesus actually was

The real Jesus went toward the people religion pushed away, and refused to condemn those everyone else condemned.

“Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?... Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.”
John 8:10-11

That is who you are being invited to meet, not the person who hurt you. Read one Gospel and see the difference with your own eyes.

Honest questions

Should I judge Jesus by Christians?
It is fair to judge Jesus by who Jesus actually is, not by people who misrepresent him. His own followers betrayed, denied, and abandoned him (Matthew 26:56), and he condemned religious hypocrites more sharply than any critic (Matthew 23).
Christians hurt me. Does that mean God did?
The people who hurt you are not the same as God or as Jesus. Real harm was done, and it deserves to be named. But Jesus is shown in the Gospels standing with the wounded, not with those who wound in his name.
How can I separate Jesus from the people who claim him?
By going to the source. Read the Gospels and watch how Jesus treats people directly. Let him, not those who misuse his name, define who he is. If church hurt you, /church-hurt is a gentle place to be honest.

Meet him before you decide about the rest

You do not have to defend the church that wounded you, or the Christians who let you down, or any argument anyone has ever made in his name. Set all of it down for a moment. Before you decide what you think about Christianity, meet the man at the center of it, in his own words, without anyone standing between you and the page. Watch how he treats the tired, the shamed, and the ones religion threw away. Then decide.
