A Bible reading plan for

When You Cannot Sleep

7 nights, a psalm before sleep

For the nights when your mind will not switch off, this seven-night plan gives you a quiet psalm to carry into the dark. These are the prayers of people who lay awake and learned to rest, not because everything was solved, but because the God who keeps them never sleeps.

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”Psalm 4:8 (KJV)

The plan, day by day

  1. Night 1

    Psalm 4

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety. Let the last word of the day be trust.

  2. Night 2

    Psalm 3

I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me. He keeps watch while you rest.

  3. Night 3

    Psalm 63

When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches. Fill the sleepless hours with Him.

  4. Night 4

    Psalm 91

He shall cover thee with His feathers. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night. Rest under His wings.

  5. Night 5

    Matthew 11

Come unto me, and I will give you rest. Bring the racing thoughts to Him before you close your eyes.

  6. Night 6

    Psalm 121

He that keepeth thee will not slumber. You can sleep because Someone stays awake over you.

  7. Night 7

    Psalm 127

He giveth His beloved sleep. Sleep itself is a gift from the God who loves you, not something you must earn.

A reading plan is a servant, not a master. If you miss days there is no guilt here and no scorecard in heaven. Simply begin again where you left off. The goal was never to finish a list but to meet the One these words are about, Jesus, who is glad to be found by you today.

Where this plan is leading

Jesus slept soundly in a boat through a raging storm, so at peace in His Father that the wind did not wake Him. He can quiet your inner storm too. Whatever keeps you awake, you can hand it to the One who holds the night and holds you, and lie down in the peace that He alone gives.

Questions people ask

What does the Bible say about not being able to sleep?

The Bible speaks tenderly to the sleepless. Psalm 4:8 says, I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep, for you, Lord, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 127:2 says God gives His beloved sleep, and Psalm 121 promises that the One who keeps you never slumbers. Sleeplessness is met with the assurance of a God who watches over you.

What Bible verses help with sleep and anxiety at night?

Psalm 4:8, Psalm 3:5, Psalm 91, and Matthew 11:28 are gentle places to rest a racing mind. Reading one slowly and turning it into a short prayer as you lie down can quiet the anxious thoughts that keep you awake.

Is it okay to pray when I cannot sleep?

Absolutely. Psalm 63:6 speaks of remembering God on the bed and meditating on Him in the night watches. Sleepless hours can become time with God. Hand Him your worries, rest in His presence, and let Him carry what you cannot fix at 3 a.m.
