Did the earliest Christians believe Jesus was God?

Yes. The earliest sources already treat Jesus as divine. The creed in 1 Corinthians 15 is dated by scholars to within a few years of the crucifixion, and the hymn in Philippians 2 exalts Christ as Lord. Thomas even calls him "my Lord and my God." High belief was early, not gradual.
