Am I good enough for God?

The short answer

No one is good enough for God, and that is the honest starting point of the Christian gospel, not the end of it. The Bible says every person falls short, so no amount of trying earns God's acceptance. But the good news is that God does not wait for you to become good enough. He offers himself as a gift, through Jesus, to people who could never deserve it. You come to God not on the strength of your record but on the strength of his mercy.

The question quietly assumes that God grades on effort, and that if you could just be good enough, he would finally accept you. Christianity says something more humbling and more freeing at once: the standard is perfect, none of us reaches it, and God knew that before he ever invited you.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”

The gospel is not a reward for the good

If acceptance had to be earned, no one could ever rest, because you could never be sure you had done enough. So God did the unthinkable: he came in Jesus and met the standard himself, then offered his own goodness to all who trust him. Grace means unearned favour, given precisely because we could not earn it.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-9

This is why the message is called good news. It is not advice for the strong but rescue for the honest. The only thing being asked of you is to stop pretending you are good enough, and to receive what you could never achieve.

It comes back to Jesus

God proved this in the most costly way. He did not wait until we had cleaned ourselves up; he came to us as we were, and Scripture says that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. If you feel unworthy, you are exactly the person Jesus came for. You do not have to become good enough first. You come as you are, and he makes you new.
