How Jesus Treated the Poor
Jesus was born into poverty, lived without a home of His own, and made the poor the special focus of His mission rather than an afterthought to it. When He announced what He had come to do, the first line was about them: the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He did not treat poverty as a sign of God's disfavor or a problem to be kept at a distance. He blessed the poor, He noticed the widow that everyone else ignored, and He measured generosity not by its size but by its cost. If you are poor, or have ever felt worthless because of what you lack, Jesus saw people like you first.

What the Gospels actually show
Standing in His hometown synagogue, He read from Isaiah and applied it to Himself: he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. In His great sermon He lifted up his eyes on his disciples and said, blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. And in one small, piercing scene, He watched a poor widow drop two tiny coins into the temple treasury while wealthy men gave large gifts, and He called his disciples over to say, this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they. He saw what no one else in that crowded court had noticed, and He honored it publicly. To Jesus, she was the story.
Why this drew people to Him
The poor loved Jesus because He did not look through them. In a world that measures people by what they own, He measured them by their hearts, and He often found the rich wanting and the poor rich toward God. He did not romanticize poverty, but neither did He despise the poor; He gave them dignity, attention, and hope. The widow with her two coins got His full attention while the powerful got His warning. People who had been invisible their whole lives discovered that in His eyes they were seen, valued, and even celebrated. A love that honors you when you have nothing to offer is a love worth following anywhere.
Come to this Jesus
The way Jesus treated the poor reveals a God whose love is not for sale and cannot be bought. The kingdom He brings belongs first to those who know their need, which is why He said the poor are blessed. If life has left you with empty hands, you are not disqualified from His kingdom; you may be closer to it than you know. He came to preach good news to people exactly like you, not pity but genuine good news, a place in His family and a wealth that no poverty can touch. Did Jesus really favor the poor?
He gave them particular attention and honor. He announced good news to the poor as central to His mission, blessed them openly, and repeatedly warned about the spiritual dangers of wealth. He did not condemn every rich person, but He made sure the poor knew they were seen and valued in a world that overlooked them.
Why did Jesus praise the widow's tiny gift over large ones?
Because He measured generosity by cost, not amount. The wealthy gave out of abundance; she gave out of her poverty, everything she had. He saw the heart behind the gift, not just its size. It is a window into how differently He values things from how the world does.
Does God look down on people who are poor?
Not at all; the opposite. Jesus identified with the poor, was born among them, and centered His mission on them. Poverty is never a sign of God's disfavor in His eyes. If you are poor, you are precisely the kind of person He came to bring good news to, and there is a place for you in His kingdom.
