Who is Jesus?
Why did Jesus die?
The short answer
Jesus died not as a tragic accident, and not merely as a martyr for a cause, but as a deliberate rescue. The Bible says he died in our place, bearing the penalty for human sin so that we could be forgiven and brought back to God. His death was not God failing to save him; it was God saving us. Love, not weakness, held him to the cross.
From the outside a crucifixion looks only like defeat: a good man crushed by the powers of his day. The New Testament insists something deeper was happening beneath the surface, something Jesus himself said he came to do. He was not merely killed; he gave his life.
“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
Isaiah 53:5
A death in our place
Sin is not a small thing, and a just God cannot simply ignore it any more than a good judge can wink at cruelty. At the cross, God took the penalty his own justice required and bore it himself, in the person of his Son, so that mercy and justice could meet without either being betrayed. Jesus stood where we should have stood.
“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.”
1 Peter 3:18
This is why Christians speak of the cross as love rather than tragedy. No one took Jesus' life from him that he did not lay down freely, and he laid it down for people who were not asking him to, including you.
It comes back to Jesus
The cross is not the end of the story; three days later the tomb was empty, and the death that looked like defeat was revealed as victory. If you have ever wondered whether you are worth loving, look at what Jesus was willing to endure to have you. He did not die because you were good enough. He died because he loved you while you were not.
