Who is Jesus?
What is the gospel?
The short answer
The gospel means good news, and the news is this: God became man in Jesus Christ, lived the life we should have lived, died the death we deserved to die, and rose again to defeat death, so that everyone who trusts him is forgiven and given eternal life. It is not advice about how to climb up to God. It is the announcement that God has come down to us. The gospel is not first about what you must do, but about what Jesus has already done.
Most religions are, at heart, instructions: do these things, keep these rules, and perhaps one day you will be accepted. The gospel is different in kind. The word itself means good news, the sort of thing a herald announces after a battle is already won. It reports an event before it asks anything of you.
“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”
1 Corinthians 15:3-4
The news in one breath
We were made for God but turned away, and the gap between us and him was one we could never close ourselves. So God closed it. In Jesus he lived a perfect life, took the penalty of our wrong onto himself at the cross, and rose again, so that his goodness could be counted as ours and death itself could be undone. What we could not earn, he gives away.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23
That is why the only fitting response is not first effort but trust. You do not clean yourself up to receive a gift. You open your hands. Everything else, the changed life, the obedience, the joy, grows out of having received it, never in order to earn it.
It comes back to Jesus
The gospel is finally a person, not a program. To believe it is to entrust yourself to Jesus, who did all of this for you before you ever knew his name. If it sounds too good to be true, that is exactly what good news is supposed to sound like. You can receive it today, simply by turning to him.
