Why does God allow suffering?

The Bible does not give a formula that makes suffering reasonable, but it does not deny the pain either. Much suffering flows from a world made genuinely free, and some has no explanation we can see. What faith offers is a God who entered suffering Himself in Jesus, and who is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).

If God is good, why did this happen to me?

A good God allowing pain is one of the oldest and hardest questions, and Scripture treats it with honesty, not easy answers. The book of Job wrestles with it openly. God does not promise a life without grief, but He promises to be with you in it and to work even terrible things toward good (Romans 8:28).

Is it wrong to be angry at God?

No. The Psalms are full of raw, angry prayers, and Jesus Himself cried out in anguish. God is not fragile. He welcomes your honest anger far more than distant politeness.

The hardest question

Why did God let this happen?

The short answer

There is no tidy answer that makes deep suffering reasonable, and the Bible never offers one. What it offers is a God who entered suffering Himself in Jesus, who does not cause your harm, who stays near the brokenhearted, and who can weave even the worst things toward good.

Few questions cut deeper than this one, and it deserves an honest answer rather than a tidy one. The Bible never treats suffering as a small thing or pretends it does not hurt. A whole book, Job, is given to a good man who loses everything and demands to know why, and God does not scold him for asking.

Christians have wrestled with this for centuries and hold it with humility. Much pain flows from a world made free, where love is possible only because refusal is possible too, and where that freedom is misused and wounds the innocent. Some suffering has no explanation we can see from here. What faith offers is not a formula that makes the pain reasonable, but a God who entered the pain Himself. In Jesus, God did not stay at a safe distance from grief; He wept, He bled, He was betrayed and killed. Your suffering is not proof that He is absent.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28

Notice what that verse does not say. It does not say every thing is good, or that God caused the harm. It says God can weave even the worst things toward good, without wasting your grief or excusing what hurt you.

You are allowed to be angry with God

The Psalms are full of people shouting their pain heavenward. God is not fragile, and He would rather have your honest anger than your polite distance. Tell Him the truth of what this has done to you.

God, I do not understand why You let this happen, and part of me is angry. I bring You the whole weight of it. If You are near the brokenhearted, be near me now. Do not waste my pain. Amen.
