The Heavens Opened at the Baptism
When Jesus came up out of the Jordan, the heavens tore open, the Spirit descended like a dove, and the Father's voice spoke from above. In one moment the whole Trinity stood revealed at the threshold of Christ's ministry.

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water, and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him. And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Here the heavens do not merely part for a vision; they open at the beginning of the Son's public ministry, and all three Persons of the Godhead are present at once. The Son stands in the water, taking His place among sinners though He had no sin. The Spirit descends upon Him. The Father speaks His approval from heaven. It is one of the clearest revelations of the triune God in all of Scripture.

How it points to Christ. Here Christ is not a witness to an open heaven; He is its center. The heavens open unto Him because He is the one true meeting place of God and man. This scene is the living fulfillment of His own word, ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man (John 1:51). The Father's declaration, This is my beloved Son, tells us who bears the Spirit and who will carry the sin of the world. And the whole point of His baptism, standing with sinners to fulfil all righteousness, runs toward the cross, where the veil of His flesh is torn as the heavens once were, opening a new and living way. Because the Father is well pleased in the Son, we have boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 10:19-20).
