What happens when we die?

This is one of the most human questions there is, and it is okay to want a real answer rather than a comforting fog. Christians believe death is not the end of you. The Bible teaches that the person outlasts the body, and that beyond death there is life with God for those who belong to Him.

“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.”
John 11:25

“In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.”

What Christians agree on, and where they differ

Across traditions, Christians share the core hope: that death is a doorway, not a wall, and that God will one day raise the dead and make all things new. Traditions describe the details differently. Some speak of the soul being with the Lord immediately after death while awaiting the resurrection of the body; some Catholic and Orthodox believers hold to a purifying stage; others emphasize resting until the resurrection. These are honest differences, and no faithful person should pretend they do not exist. What unites them is the hope of resurrection and the presence of God.

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.”
Revelation 21:4
