The Tree of Life
In the middle of Eden's garden God set a tree whose fruit gave life. It stood at the center of the world He had made, a sign that life is His gift to receive, not a prize to seize. When humanity fell, the way to it was guarded, and the whole Bible aches toward its return.
“And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”Genesis 2:9
The tree
Genesis places this tree in the very center of the garden, beside the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It was pleasant to the sight and good for food, and its purpose was plain in its name. To eat of it was to go on living, to remain in unbroken fellowship with the God who walked in the garden in the cool of the day. After the fall, the account tells us God stationed cherubim and a flaming sword to guard the way to the tree, lest fallen humanity eat and live forever in that broken state. The tree did not vanish from the story. It was withdrawn, held in reserve, waiting at the far end of Scripture for a people made new.
What it means
The tree of life frames the whole human story between a garden lost and a garden restored. Its presence says that life was always meant to be received from God, sustained by nearness to Him. Its loss marks the deepest wound of the fall, not merely death but exile from the source of life. The guarded way is mercy as much as judgment, for God would not let people be fixed forever in their brokenness. Proverbs later borrows the image for wisdom, righteousness, and healing words. Everything after Eden leans forward, hoping the way home might one day open again.
How it points to Christ
Jesus opens the road back to the tree of life. The flaming sword that barred the way fell instead upon Him, for He was made a curse for us and bore in His body the judgment that shut Eden's gate. Where the first Adam reached out and took forbidden fruit and lost life, the last Adam stretched out His hands upon a tree and gave His life to win it back. He calls Himself the life, and promises that whoever eats the bread He gives will live forever. In Revelation the risen Christ pledges the tree of life to all who overcome, and the paradise that was lost becomes the paradise regained in Him.
